What Is AVGS Coaching in Mönchengladbach?
AVGS coaching in Mönchengladbach is start-up coaching that you use with an Activation and Placement Voucher (Aktivierungs- und Vermittlungsgutschein, AVGS, § 45 SGB III) from the Employment Agency (Agentur für Arbeit) or Jobcenter responsible for Mönchengladbach. Once approved in writing, it comes with no personal contribution. The voucher is a discretionary benefit (Ermessensleistung). The program is delivered online by the AZAV-certified UW Unternehmensweg GmbH (Z-000392-2); the initial consultation (30 minutes) is free of charge.
In Mönchengladbach, the Employment Agency at Lürriper Straße 56 is also responsible for the Rhein-Kreis Neuss district. At the Jobcenter, your postal code decides between the Zentrum location (Fliethstraße 57) and the Rheydt location (Limitenstraße 144-148); the team for founders is also based in Rheydt. More on this in the section AVGS in Mönchengladbach.

Mönchengladbach: A Strong Location for Your Start-Up
Central location, strong industries, and good networks: Mönchengladbach offers ideal conditions for your self-employment. We support you throughout, entirely online.

Mönchengladbach on the Lower Rhine (Niederrhein) has developed from a long-established textile city into a versatile business location. Particularly strongly represented are: textiles and fashion (with Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences and its textile degree programs), mechanical and plant engineering (including SMS group and Scheidt & Bachmann), logistics and trade thanks to its location on the Lower Rhine, and a growing healthcare and services sector. Mönchengladbach benefits from low location costs, its proximity to Düsseldorf, and an active start-up scene around the university. Pavel Deuble and his nationwide team have supported many founders from Mönchengladbach in these industries, entirely online and regardless of location.
Funding landscape in North Rhine-Westphalia: NRW.BANK
As the development bank of the state of NRW, NRW.BANK supports start-ups with low-interest loans, microloans, and equity investments. We know the right building blocks and prepare your application so that it is bankable.
We support founders in Mönchengladbach and the surrounding area, including Krefeld, Viersen, Neuss, and Düsseldorf, entirely online and regardless of location.
Trade tax in Mönchengladbach: municipal multiplier of 490%
The city of Mönchengladbach levies trade tax (Gewerbesteuer) at a municipal multiplier (Hebesatz) of 490% (as of 2026, source: City of Mönchengladbach). The multiplier determines how much trade tax is due on your profit and therefore belongs in every financial plan.
Sole proprietorships and partnerships have an allowance of €24,500 of profit per year. The tax office (Finanzamt) also credits a large part of the trade tax against income tax, up to 4.0 times the tax base amount (§ 35 EStG). Freelancers, such as physicians, architects, or journalists, do not pay trade tax.
Example calculation with €60,000 profit per year
- Sole proprietorship: €6,088 trade tax. Up to €4,970 of this can be credited against income tax, leaving an additional burden of around €1,118.
- GmbH (limited liability company; no allowance, no credit): €10,290 trade tax.
Simplified calculation without add-backs, solidarity surcharge, and church tax; the credit is also limited to the income tax attributable to business income. This does not replace tax advice. In your business plan we calculate with your municipality’s multiplier. Which legal form makes financial sense for you is shown by the legal form finder (Rechtsform-Finder).
Starting a business in Mönchengladbach: facts and figures
The figures for Mönchengladbach come from the IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein (Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the Middle Lower Rhine), IT.NRW (the state statistics office), the Employment Agency, and the city (as of October 16, 2026). They show how many businesses were newly registered and what the labor market looks like.
| Key figure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Business registrations for new start-ups 2025 | 2,464, 10% more than in 2024 (2,240) | IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein, start-up report 2026 |
| Business closures 2025 | 1,973, meaning 491 more new start-ups than closures | IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein, start-up report 2026 |
| Strongest sector by registrations 2024 | Trade and motor vehicles with 27.6% of all 2,605 business registrations | IT.NRW, municipal profile of Mönchengladbach |
| Unemployed in September 2026 | 15,613 (rate 10.8%), of which 4,606 with the Employment Agency (SGB III) and 11,007 with the Jobcenter (SGB II) | Employment Agency, labor market report September 2026 |
| People receiving the start-up grant | 219 in September 2026 in the Employment Agency’s district (Mönchengladbach and Rhein-Kreis Neuss) | Employment Agency, labor market report September 2026 |
| Fee for business registration | €26 for sole proprietorships and per partner of a GbR, €33 for GmbH and UG | City of Mönchengladbach, business registration office |
| Trade tax multiplier | 490% since 2016 (NRW average: 463%) | City of Mönchengladbach, IT.NRW |
| Craft businesses | 3,603 on December 31, 2024 | Handwerkskammer Düsseldorf |
Freelancers are missing from the business statistics because they do not register a trade. The total number of start-ups is therefore higher.

AVGS in Mönchengladbach: Who Is Responsible for You
In Mönchengladbach, two offices decide on your voucher: the Employment Agency if you receive unemployment benefit I, and the Jobcenter if you receive basic income support. Both can issue the AVGS for “introduction to self-employment” (Heranführung an eine selbständige Tätigkeit; § 45 para. 1 sentence 1 no. 4 SGB III, for the Jobcenter via § 16 SGB II). The decision is at the discretion of your placement specialist.
With unemployment benefit I: Employment Agency
- The Employment Agency at Lürriper Straße 56 is responsible for the city and the Rhein-Kreis Neuss district. If you live in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss, you are supported at the Neuss, Grevenbroich, or Dormagen branch offices.
- You get the appointment with your placement specialist via 0800 4555500 (Mon–Thu 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., Fri 8:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.) or online.
- The Employment Agency also takes urgent matters without an appointment Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to noon.
- For the start-up grant, you still need a remaining entitlement to unemployment benefit I of at least 150 days. The Employment Agency decides at its discretion; there is no legal entitlement.
With basic income support: Jobcenter
- From the age of 25, your postal code decides: the Jobcenter Zentrum at Fliethstraße 57 and the Rheydt location at Limitenstraße 144-148 divide the city between them. Which postal code belongs where is listed below in the questions.
- If you are under 25, go to the Jugendberufsagentur (youth employment agency) at Lürriper Straße 56 (4th floor), regardless of which district you live in.
- For founders, there is the “Selbständige / Existenzgründer” team (self-employed people and business founders) in Rheydt. The Jobcenter gives appointments at 02161 9488-0.
- You can also send applications and messages via jobcenter.digital. You get the access data at the same number.
Costs and phone times in Mönchengladbach
- The IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein issues the viability certificate (Tragfähigkeitsbescheinigung) for the start-up grant for a fee of €80. The Employment Agency does not cover these costs. You are free to choose the qualified body.
- You apply for the entry allowance for start-ups from basic income support before starting your business. It can be paid for up to 24 months. There is no entitlement to it.
- According to the Jobcenter, the phones are particularly busy between 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. If possible, call outside these times.
